Q&A With Gareth Dauley, KOE Group

Up next in our Q&A series, Gareth Dauley, CEO at KOE Group, dives into the importance of diversity in tackling the complex challenges faced by the energy industry.

Why did you choose a career in the energy industry?

After pursuing a career as a professional American football player, I made the deliberate decision to transition into an industry that would have a lasting impact and provide significant benefits to society. I have long been captivated by the clean energy sector and its potential to revolutionize the way we power our world. Throughout my career, I have consistently championed innovation and sought to develop solutions for the energy sector. Over time, my passion for the industry has only grown stronger, as I have shifted my focus from individual building systems to the creation of comprehensive energy solutions and the development of assets that will facilitate the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The new energy sector is rapidly evolving, what do you think we can expect to see in the next three, five, and ten years?

The emerging energy sector is on the brink of a rapid transformation over the next decade (infrastructure doesn’t move that quickly compared to other industries), driven by technological advancements and a shift in government policies towards renewable energy sources. Anticipate a substantial surge in the adoption of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and new technology as they become increasingly cost-effective and efficient. The implementation of smart grid systems will be pivotal in enhancing energy storage and distribution capabilities, leading to a more reliable and resilient energy infrastructure. Progress in battery technology and electric vehicles will expedite the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable transportation industry.

What would you say is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

I have built credibility through my accomplishments in my professional background. Nevertheless, as a startup, I currently lack a proven track record and the resources to compete with multi-billion-dollar funds. Despite these obstacles, I have the ability to adapt swiftly and create innovative strategies that set me apart in the market. While I acknowledge the presence of unconscious bias in my industry, I choose to collaborate only with companies that value my expertise and are open to embracing my unique skill set.

Why do you think diversity within the new energy sector is important?

Diversity is a critical component within the new energy sector for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, a diverse workforce brings together individuals with a wide array of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds, fostering a culture of innovation and creativity that is essential for tackling the complex challenges facing the industry. Moreover, a diverse workforce enables companies to better understand and cater to a diverse customer base, ultimately leading to increased market reach and profitability.

Embracing diversity allows the new energy sector to access a broader talent pool, improve decision-making processes, and drive overall success in a fiercely competitive global market. Ultimately, diversity is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage. By embracing varied perspectives and inclusive practices, companies within the new energy sector can unlock significant benefits that will propel them towards success in the industry.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in new energy?

For women (and anyone else) interested in pursuing a career in the new energy sector, I would advise being proactive, persistent, and passionate about driving positive change. It is essential to stay abreast of the latest industry developments and trends, while actively seeking out opportunities for networking and professional growth. Establishing a robust support system of mentors and peers can prove invaluable in navigating a predominantly male-dominated field.

Moreover, possessing a solid technical foundation and refining skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication is crucial for achieving success in this field. Embracing challenges and taking calculated risks will foster both professional and personal growth, it can be tough to break into the industry as you don’t know what you don’t know, but there are many allies out there that are always willing to help and put you in the right direction. Embrace that and see that as your rocket fuel to a new future.
